Mhow: With the arrival of autumn and the familiar fragrance of parijat in the air, the Bengali community of Mhow is brimming with anticipation for the most cherished festival of the year i.e. Durga Puja. The five-day celebration, beginning from Shashthi on September 28 and culminating with Dashami on October 2, is set to bring the town alive with devotion, culture, and festivity.
Preparations for the grand occasion began months ago under the guidance of the Mhow Durga Puja Committee. From securing land and permissions to designing the pandal, selecting idols, arranging food, games, prizes, and the community’s annual magazine, every detail has been meticulously planned. The committee has also ensured that the traditional rituals of the puja remain the central focus amid the festivities.
This year, the chosen theme is Bengali Culture, aimed at reconnecting younger generations of probashi (diaspora) Bengalis with their heritage. To achieve this, the committee has woven in elements of Bengali art, literature, cinema, cuisine, and textiles throughout the celebrations.
A highlight of the entertainment program is a home production play titled “The Evolution of Bengali Music.” Conceptualized, scripted, and performed by community members after weeks of rehearsals, the play promises to be a cultural treat. To further enrich the experience, theatre groups from Kolkata have been invited to perform on two evenings during the festival.
The evenings will also witness spirited performances of the traditional dhunuchi dance, while children and families participate in cultural competitions and community feasts.
As the pandal structure rises and the sound of dhaak (drums) begins to echo, Mhow readies itself to welcome Ma Durga with devotion and joy – reaffirming the spirit of togetherness that the festival symbolizes for Bengalis across the world.
